Report: Redskins to waive Robert Griffin III when healthy?
The Washington Redskins named Kirk Cousins their starting quarterback recently, leaving the future and status of Robert Griffin III up in the air. According to a former Eagles exec and current ESPN analyst, the expectation should be that RG3 or ‘QB’ would be waived due to a $16M cap number next year.
All these recent pieces of news have RG3 like…
This is a really interesting turn of events for RG3, who likely had his last chance to win the starting job in Washington this year, and now the team has to make a decision on his future. Keeping him around really doesn’t do the team any good, nor does it do RG3 any good. There’s virtually no trade value for him right now, especially with everyone’s QB situations shaking out.
The Redskins could subject him to waivers and see if teams will bite on a potential $16 million cap number next year (which RG3 could apparently negotiate), but the likelihood is that he’d pass through unclaimed and choose his next team. This is the polar opposite of the situation surrounding the former Heisman trophy winner back in 2012, when Mike Shanahan and the Redskins gave up a massive number of draft picks (which have turned out to be great assets for the Rams) in order to secure the right to draft RG3.
It seems like these dominoes could fall rather quickly…
So what team would take a chance on Griffin? That is tough to say at this point, but there are some interesting situations around the league. One team name that has probably been thrown around more than others is the Philadelphia Eagles and Chip Kelly, which feature an offense that could maximize Griffin’s skills.
John Elway liked Griffin in the 2012 NFL Draft and backup Brock Osweiler also has an expiring contract going into this season.
There are plenty of teams that would come calling for an athlete of this caliber, but Griffin hasn’t proven he’s all that good at playing quarterback anymore. His rookie season was a brilliant flash in the pan, but so far, that’s all it’s been. We’ll be monitoring this situation closely.
