One of the worst mistakes in regards to evaluating a player is clinging to the past.  Everybody remembers the amazing rookie season Robert Griffin III had in 2012 when he rallied the Washington Redskins down the stretch to make the playoffs, winning Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl honors in the process.

Here’s the problem.  He hasn’t been anywhere close to the same player since.  Each season he has played fewer games, gotten sacked more often, thrown for fewer touchdowns and more interceptions and been less of a threat on the ground.  Now further reports are coming out that the embattled quarterback not only has a rocky relationship with head coach Jay Gruden, but his own offensive linemen as well.

Yes, it’s been documented thousands of times about what Washington gave up to draft RGIII back three years ago.  Just so everybody is clear, here it is again.

"“The Rams sent the pick that became Robert Griffin III to Washington and received a first-round pick in 2012, a second-round pick in 2012, a first-round pick in 2013 and a first-round pick in 2014.”"

That is a lot to give up for any player, including a quarterback.  Especially one who was completely unproven at the time.  Griffin did flash early, but there has to come a time when the Redskins need to swallow their pride and say enough is enough.  Teams have missed on big trade packages than that and still found a way to start winning again not too long afterwards.  He hasn’t looked anything like the same player he was and don’t forget that the coaching staff and front office that drafted him are both gone now.

It’s safe to say the new regime has their own ideas about who should play quarterback.  Is it really necessary to play out this charade any longer, putting Griffin at further injury risk in the process?

Hopefully common sense will get through to somebody eventually.
