Titans v. Rams First Half Observations

Score at the Half: Titans 20 – Rams 0

Mariota’s Improved

Marietta looked much more poised and relaxed so far in his second game. Much more composure in the pocket and used his legs to make those highlight reel plays. Dexter McCluter dropped what would have been a touchdown, but Mariota led a successful scoring drive none the less towards the end of the first quarter. The Fox broadcasters says he has looked the part of a “star” that the Titans have desperately been looking for.

He finished 5-8 for 59 yards, no touchdowns, no turnovers.

Rams Offensive Line Still Needs Work

Nick Foles was accustomed to a great Philadelphia offensive line, so this mismatched offensive line is an issue for him. Greg Robinson let a couple guys get past him and a deflating pocket led to some poor decisions by Foles. The former Eagle finished the first quarter with only two completions on six attempts.

Bishop Sankey Looked Stronger Than David Cobb

Sankey has been hitting the hole much better this preseason than he did all last season. The competition with David Cobb is still on, and so far Sankey has shown the ability Tennessee saw when they drafted him last year.

When I scouted Cobb, I constantly saw a domino of a running back. Goes down really easily and isn’t effective in the redzone.

The Entire Rams Offense Seemed Anemic

Punt. After Punt. After Punt. Nick Foles just couldn’t lead a successful drive. Once Todd Gurley gets out there, the entire offense will change. Benny Cunningham missed a huge hole in the second quarter and Tre Mason only averaged two yards per run. Maybe it’s the offensive line, but they need to make leaps and bounds if they want to contend for a playoff spot this year. Guys like Tavon Austin really need to find their grove with Foles if the team is going to succeed. Maybe Austin just needs a different setting to make it work, cause the kid has that potential.

Zach Mettenberger Should Start Somewhere

A nice redzone pass that led to a touchdown proved that Mettenberger deserves a chance somewhere. At this point it’s not Tennessee, but maybe the Jets need to take a close look at him. The ball was coming out of his hand with a decent amount of zip and his accuracy was on point, connecting with Dorial Green-Beckham multiple times along the sideline in the two-minute offense.
