The Friday action of the week 2 for the NFL preseason featured some interesting takeaways from all the teams involved. Here were the ones that could have a far-reaching effect depending on what happens leading up to opening day.
Matt Ryan must throw Falcons to playoffs
Among the quarterbacks who look like they’re in midseason form already is Matt Ryan. The Atlanta Falcons veteran leader had his second-straight week of solid work (4-of-5 for 75 yards, 1 TD). This time he did it without Julio Jones, which is good to know because there is still plenty of reason to worry about that running game for the dirty birds.
For most of the game their offensive line failed to create any lanes for the running backs, and the injuries that continue to plague that position aren’t helping. It’s just a further sign that if the Falcons are going to have a shot at the NFC South crown, it’s going to be on the right arm of Ryan and an improved defense.
Brandon Marshall trade looks like a steal
The New York Jets brass seemed right to take every precaution for their offense by trading for veteran receiver Brandon Marshall given the uncertainty at quarterback. Marshall has a long history of being a security blanket for whoever is throwing the ball as his four catches for 62 yards proved against the Falcons.
So far there has been no problem at all regarding his history of personality problems that got him traded out of Denver, Miami and Chicago. If that holds true the rest of the season and he stays healthy, then the Jets got an outright steal. After all, he’s still only 31-years old.
