The standing ovation in the first game of the preseason for Tim Tebow wasn’t a surprise.  Everybody knows the former two-time national champion at Florida and architect of the improbable Denver Broncos run to the 2011 playoffs still had plenty of fans even though he hadn’t played football since 2012.

What gave the debut so much buzz, besides the history was the anticipation that he would debut a brand new throwing motion that supposedly was a vast improvement over the slow, over-the-top one that turned so many teams off to him as a legitimate option at quarterback.  So what were the results in his appearance against the Colts?

Honestly, more of the same.

At the end of the game he had gone 6-of-12 for 69 yards, ran in a seven-yard touchdown and also fumbled once.  Anybody familiar with his past exploits will see right away that the stat line is unchanged.

During his best season four years ago with the Broncos, Tebow was completing 50% or fewer of his passes, creating most of his big plays by running and not protecting the ball when rushed.  He had 13 fumbles that season.

Aside from a quicker, more compact release on his throws there is no indication to believe Tim Tebow has suddenly become a viable quarterback who can start in the NFL.  He still suffers from accuracy issues and is way too careless with the ball.  Combine that with the hits he’d continue to take from his desire to run the ball and that also speaks to longevity concerns.

This is not to say Tebow has no place in the NFL.  There are many creative ways the Philadelphia Eagles can make use of him.  However, if there are those out there who wish to see him leading a huddle again, that ship has long since sailed.
