It would be must-see television if this were the regular season opener. Alas, fans will just have to settle for a preseason tilt between the Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots. Still, it doesn’t mean there won’t be some interesting things to watch for, both during and after the primary starters see action.
Here are the key points for fans to track during the game.
Roster Battles To Watch
Packers: Micah Hyde vs. Damarious Randall
Losses in free agency at cornerback compelled the Packers to reload during the draft. Their top choice, Damarious Randall is expected to get on the field sooner than later. It’s just a matter of how and when. Most believe he has a good shot at the slot position but he’ll have to contend with third-year man Micah Hyde, who seemed to find a home there last season. Given both have a mixture of corner and safety to their game, it should be fun to watch.
Patriots: Logan Ryan vs. Tarell Brown
Another team that saw their secondary gutted by free agency. The New England Patriots are relying on Super Bowl hero Malcolm Butler to start moving forward, so the big question is finding out who will play across from him. The early favorite will be former 3rd round pick Logan Ryan who was a key reserve last season. He’ll be challenged by veteran Tarell Brown who had a successful run in San Francisco before a rough season last year in Oakland. Look for versatility to decide the winner here.
