Geno Smith May Lose New York Jets Job Over $600

New York Jets quarterbacks have lost the starting job over the years for a lot of reasons ranging from injury to scheme change.  Most argue it was simple bad play.  How incredible would it be if their latest attempt at filling the Joe Namath shadow failed because the guy couldn’t repay a $600 debt.

Nobody is saying Smith had it coming, but the guy had to know he couldn’t afford any kind of setback.  He was already on the heels of an ugly 2014 season, lost both the coach and GM who drafted him and saw the new regime bring in not one but two possible replacements in veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick and 4th round rookie Bryce Petty.

All Jets head coach Todd Bowles needed was a sign to make him believe Smith was not the guy and he had plenty of excuse to make a change.  Granted, a broken jaw from a punch probably wasn’t the first idea but to Bowles it’s a clear indication that Smith may lack the maturity and leadership to command a locker room.

"“That’s a conversation we have to have when he comes back,” Bowles told reporters on Smith’s future as starter. “If anybody’s playing great, you lose your spot by injury, you lose your spot by a bunch of things, so if he’s playing great and the ship is going the right way, you don’t make a move. But we’ll see as we go.“If the other guy’s playing well, and the boat’s going right, and there are no waves, and everything’s going, and we’re 4, 5, 6, 7-0? Yeah, you’re not coming back to start.”"

In essence what he’s saying is Geno Smith has lost his job.  The only way he gets it back now is if Fitzpatrick doesn’t play well or gets hurt.  All of that over what amounts to pocket change for an NFL quarterback and one right hook from a former 6th round draft pick nobody knew a week ago.

Amazing.
