By now everybody has at least caught wind of the ongoing issue between wide receiver Brandon Marshall and quarterback Jay Culter. Once considered best friends, they created some unforgettable highlights and had a ton of success in Denver and Chicago. Then, during a trying 2014 season, things seems to fall apart between the two.
This resulted in Marshall being traded to the New York Jets, where he has seen fit to take a series of subtle but biting shots at his former quarterback. That included listing Chad Pennington and Kyle Orton as better quarterbacks and listing off several Bears teammates he’ll never forget while conveniently omitting Cutler’s name.
His latest came less than a week ago.
Nobody knows entirely for sure what happened between the two, but it’s fair to say that what’s done is done. Marshall can’t change anything and maybe it was time for him to do the mature thing by moving on with his new team. Instead he kept going, kept trying to portray himself as the victim in the entire situation.
The thing about such behavior is it’s starts to come across as petty after awhile, and pettiness has a way of inviting karma into the equation. One could say that is precisely what happened when Marshall’s new proclaimed “favorite” quarterback Geno Smith had his jaw broken via a sucker-punch in a locker room fight.
This means Smith could miss up to the first month of the 2015 season, putting an already questionable passing game in the hands of journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick.
Faced with that reality, is it fair to ask whether Marshall might be regretting his breakup with Cutler? Even a little bit? For all the criticism the 32-year old quarterback gets, deserved or otherwise, he was the best Marshall ever had and is easily a better option than Fitzpatrick.
His four best seasons from a numbers standpoint came when Jay was under center including a dominant 2012 when he posted 1,508 yards and 11 touchdowns. Maybe last season didn’t go as hoped and some bad things were said in the heat of frustration, but looking back it will be hard for Marshall not to say “What if…”
