St. Louis Rams: Nick Foles Signs Multi-Year Extension
After being acquiring him from the Philadelphia Eagles this winter, the St. Louis Rams have signed quarterback Nick Foles to a multi-year extension. The deal was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and is reportedly a two-year deal. Foles’s rookie contract expires after this season, giving the Rams a sense of urgency to lock-up the 26-year old quarterback through the 2017 season.
According to Ian Rapoport, the deal is worth $24 million, with a little less than $14 million guaranteed. Foles has an option his new deal to void the contract if he earns a Pro Bowl appearance or the team achieves a certain level of success. It allows Foles to restructure his deal if he shows the success he achieved back in 2013 in Philadelphia.
Drafted in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft by Andy Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles, Foles has seen his career range from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. After warming the bench for Michael Vick in Philadelphia, Foles finally got his chance to prove he’s an NFL quarterback. He went on a spectacular run in 2013, throwing 27 touchdowns and only two interceptions in the “Chip Kelly offense”, despite his limited mobility. Against the Oakland Raiders, Foles tied the NFL record for touchdowns in a game with seven. He also led the NFL in QBR in 2013 with an outstanding 119.2 rating.
After his successful two seasons in Philadelphia, Chip Kelly traded Foles to the Rams for former first overall pick Sam Bradford. Since arriving in St. Louis Foles has drawn immense praise from his teammates, including veteran tight end Jared Cook:
"“He’s everything that you want in a quarterback — everything that you’ve always wanted,” Cook said back in June. “It just feels like he belongs here, and it feels like he’s been here for a while, which is a good piece. It’s what we need.”"
Drafted in a class that included Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, and Ryan Tannehill, Foles has been able to stand out from the crowd with his arm strength and valuable leadership. This extension gives the Rams a chance to see whether Foles is the 27-2 quarterback from 2013, or the one who threw 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in an injury plagued 2014 season.
With crafty weapons such as Todd Gurley and Tavon Austin on his side, Foles will certainly have a chance to prove himself moving forward. In a pro-style offense like the Rams, he will be given every opportunity to prove he’s the guy for St. Louis in the long term. With a myriad of young talent coming in, the Rams should be fun to watch in the very near future.
