NFL Power Rankings: The Greatest Plays Of All-Time
By Erik Lambert
#22: Ghost To The Post
Rolls off the tongue doesn’t it? As good a rhyme as it is, this play had plenty of highlight reel stuff behind it. In 1977 the Oakland Raiders were looking to defend their Super Bowl title. Their first road block was a young and talented Baltimore Colts team who held home field advantage.
In one of the more exciting games in playoff history, it was a see-saw affair all afternoon and looked like a Colts victory late in the 4th quarter. Only a drive by the Raiders offense could prevent that from happening. Needing a big play, quarterback Ken Stabler saw a change in the Baltimore coverage that opened up a seam for tight end Dave Casper, whose nickname was “the Ghost.”
Stabler fired the ball downfield but the route run by Casper forced him to adjust his body to where it came almost directly over his shoulder. It was a tremendous catch that led to a Raiders field goal to tie the game.
Oakland outlasted the Colts in double overtime.
