Frank Gore Pulls No Punches On Colin Kaepernick
By Erik Lambert
December 20, 2014; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick (7) hands the football off to running back Frank Gore (21) during the first quarter against the San Diego Chargers at Levi
Nobody was entirely sure how deep the dysfunction went in the San Francisco 49ers locker room that caused a Super Bowl contender the previous three seasons to suddenly sink to a mediocre 8-8 record. Sure, injuries and age played their part but it was also the ongoing feud between management and former head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Apparently the resentment didn’t end there. Frank Gore made that clear when he was asked about his impressions of new Indianapolis Colts teammate Andrew Luck.
The statement itself seems innocent enough, but beneath the surface is that last part about never having a quarterback who ran the huddle. Whether intended or not, but the comment was clearly a shot at Colin Kaepernick, whom was his quarterback for three seasons between 2012 and 2014.
Considering the fact the two went to a Super Bowl together and won five playoff games, it’s hard to believe Gore would say something like that. Or perhaps it’s his way of pointing out what the fatal drawback of the 49ers was in those failures.
Leadership at the quarterback position. However, Pro Bowl safety Antoine Bethea seems to disagree with that idea.
In fairness, not every leader in NFL history was of the vocal variety that Luck is part of. Some prefer to let their actions on the field do the talking. Joe Montana is a good example of that though his voice developed more over time. Is there any reason to doubt that the same can happen for Kaepernick, who is still just 27-years old?
The San Francisco 49ers intend to find out. Frank Gore will have a lot to answer for if his subtle barb turns out to be nothing more than sour grapes.
