Jadeveon Clowney News: Texans pass rusher ‘looks spectacular’

If Jadeveon Clowney can return at full strength for the Houston Texans, we might all finally get to see that fearsome duo of he and J.J. Watt, and with even more critical pieces in place a year later.

Clowney, the top overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft, played in just four games last season for the Texans, recording seven tackles. He has yet to record his first NFL sack after proving to be one of the most dynamic defensive players we’ve seen in college football in a long, long time.

His athleticism, speed, and power are remarkable, and best expressed in one play that feels like a lifetime ago.

That play, as remarkable as it is, is now a mere distant memory for Clowney, the Texans, and football fans in general. Most people remember Clowney for that hit, but it’s been almost entirely forgotten just how dominant of a football player he was. So much so, the Texans made him the number one overall pick in the draft.

Along with the best defensive player in football, Clowney will undoubtedly receive favorable matchups, but the Texans have plenty of other pieces in place to keep him in a good position to be successful. This offseason, they added Vince Wilfork from the New England Patriots, and while Wilfork isn’t the player he used to be, he is still going to be able to have a significant impact in Houston.

The addition of Benardrick McKinney in the second round of the draft this past year gives the Texans an incredibly formidable looking front seven, perhaps one of the best in the NFL if fully healthy. Certainly with a healthy J.J. Watt and Brian Cushing, teams are going to have a hard enough time game-planning for this unit.

With Clowney, Whitney Mercilus, Wilfork, Jared Crick, and McKinney?

All bets are off.

There are so many hypotheticals here, but getting Clowney back is a major step in the right direction for a Texans franchise that is going to be scratching and clawing at Andrew Luck and the Colts — perhaps literally — to get that AFC South title back to Houston.
