One of the bigger surprises of the NFL off-season in 2015 was that former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase, who had built one of the most explosive offenses in league history over the past two years around ageless wonder Peyton Manning, didn’t fill a head coaching vacancy. He came close for certain, first in Denver and again in San Francisco but something always seemed to get in the way.
That is how he ended up with the Chicago Bears and becomes the latest candidate to somehow “fix” erratic quarterback Jay Cutler.
To be fair, at this point it’s likely that Gase has more job security than Cutler does. At age 32, the quarterback has had six years to rediscover the level of play that made him a Pro Bowler in 2008. For one reason or another, from injuries to his own poor decision-making, that hasn’t happened. The Marc Trestman experiment proved a colossal failure, as their relationship deteriorated last season and effectively torpedoed the team in the process, sinking them to a 5-11 finish.
NFL.com writer Elliot Harrison believes that the arrival of Gase on the scene may just have the desired effect Trestman was supposed to.
"“While pretty much everyone considers Green Bay the favorite in the NFC North, the conference’s wild-card spots are truly up for grabs. If Cutler — who, let’s not forget, tied for the league lead with 18 interceptions last season — plays more efficiently and takes better care of the ball, why couldn’t Chicago compete with the Eagles, Cardinals, Giants and whoever else enters the fray?”"
Gase is a young coordinator who actually had a building relationship with Cutler prior to their union in Chicago. The quarterback reportedly has great respect for him and has wanted to work together for some time. That familiarity could really help smooth out the process and make life easier for both.
If there is one truth that could come out of this situation, it’s that if Adam Gase does his job and somehow returns Jay Cutler back to his Pro Bowl form in 2015, he’ll be able to hand select his head coaching job in 2016.
Such is the impact of fixing what has become perceived as the “un-fixable” in the eyes of most experts.
