One must have respect for Terrelle Pryor. He hung on to his NFL dream for as long as he could, hoping to become a quarterback in the NFL. However, with a career 56.3 completion percentage and just nine touchdown passes to 12 interceptions in 10 starts, the reason was clear enough to teams that he just didn’t have what it took for the position. So he made the difficult decision, one that several players never show willingness to embrace, that he is going to switch positions.
Now this is something that should garner interest. Quarterback is a position that relies more on instinct, reflex, accuracy and anticipation whereas wide receiver lends itself far more to size and athleticism. Pryor has plenty of both.
- 6’6″
- 240 lbs
- 4.38 in the 40-yard dash
- 2,164 yards and 17 TDs rushing in college
There is no question that Pryor is a dangerous man when he has the ball in his hands. He has that size that will allow him to box out defenders on contested catches but also the speed to stretch the field and take it to the house.
It’s not like quarterbacks haven’t successfully made this transition before either. Drew Pearson, one of the all-time leading receivers in Dallas Cowboys history was a quarterback in college. The tricky part for Pryor will be learning the art of route running and showing off whether or not he has the hands to make tough catches in traffic as the good ones must.
At age 25 he has enough time to make the transition. The question will be can he convince an NFL team to give him a chance and can he do enough to advantage if one does?
