It’s as good a story as pro sports can have. For almost 40 years, the city of Oakland had watched their beloved Golden State Warriors fall painfully short of the NBA championship. Then, almost out of nowhere, their team morphed into the best in basketball and stampeded their way to the title led by MVP Steph Curry.
So this begs the question. Is there a possible NFL version of the Warriors waiting out there? A team stacked with young talent but hasn’t fulfilled their full potential and represents a city desperate for a winner?
Indeed there is.
The Kansas City Chiefs
Why does this team qualify? Understand first of all that this was the team that put beatings down on both Super Bowl representatives from the 2014 season. They walloped the New England Patriots 41-14 and stunned what was a hot Seattle Seahawks team 24-20. So by measuring stick they were good enough to beat the best in the business, yet the Chiefs finished the season a disappointing 9-7 and out of the playoffs.
It certainly isn’t due to lack of talent. Kansas City is led by star pass rusher Justin Houston, explosive running back Jamaal Charles and Pro Bowl quarterback Alex Smith. All-Pro safety Eric Berry is set to return as well. This is a young, gifted football team.
Then there is the drought. Kansas City has not seen a championship in one of the four major sports since 1985 when the Royals won the World Series. The Chiefs won their only Super Bowl in 1969, a gap of 46 years. Hell, the team hasn’t even won a playoff game since 1993.
If any team fits that Golden State criteria in the NFL, it’s the Kansas City Chiefs. They have the talent to be great, the history of disappointment and a loyal fan base ready for a long-overdue run. All it takes is getting off on the right foot as the Warriors did.
