There is no denying the fact that the Seattle Seahawks remain one of the most talented teams in the NFL from top to bottom. Their defense is still young and boasts star power at every position while their offense is led by Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch. Smart money says to never bet against this squad.
However, history paints a pretty clear picture and it isn’t kind to team in seasons following a Super Bowl loss.
- 2001 New York Giants: 7-9 record
- 2002 St. Louis Rams: 7-9 record
- 2003 Oakland Raiders: 4-12 record
- 2004 Carolina Panthers: 7-9 record
- 2005 Philadelphia Eagles: 6-10 record
- 2006 Seattle Seahawks: 9-7 record
- 2007 Chicago Bears: 7-9 record
- 2008 New England Patriots: 11-5 record
- 2009 Arizona Cardinals: 10-6 record
- 2010 Indianapolis Colts: 10-6 record
- 2011 Pittsburgh Steelers: 12-4 record
- 2012 New England Patriots: 12-4 record
- 2013 San Francisco 49ers: 12-4 record
- 2014 Denver Broncos: 12-4 record
One will notice right away that the recent trends show teams have been able to recover enough to make the playoffs, some of which even won a playoff game in the process. However, all the teams share one inescapable fact: they didn’t make it back to the Super Bowl.
That is a trend the Seahawks are going to try to buck in 2015, getting the foul taste of how that epic game in February ended. It will take every ounce of effort, talent, swagger and smarts they have to do so because the NFC isn’t getting any easier to navigate, especially not given the physical way they play.
Can they withstand another long playoff run to right that wrong? Time will certainly tell the tale.
