Quarterback Battles: Buffalo Bills

facebooktwitterreddit

The Bills opted not to take a quarterback in 2015, a smart option considering the massive amount of talent coming out next season. Unfortunately, their attempt to assemble a group of competent, place holder quarterbacks hasn’t been as successful as Rex Ryan probably would have hoped. They are a ship with out a captain at the moment; with a solid defense and electric offensive pieces, the rest of the Bills franchise are set to sail towards a Lombardi Trophy.

Lets examine some of Rex’s option in 2015 at the quarterback position for the Bills.

Matt Cassel

The Bills acquired Cassel in March for a couple of draft picks as a veteran option for the quarterback position. Coming of a season where the former Vikings quarterback broke his foot, Cassel has a chip on his shoulder, trying to prove he can still start in the NFL. Many think Cassel is the top option for the job right now, some think he is just a Kyle Orton replacement for a veteran voice.

EJ Manuel

The former first round pick is on the hot seat in Buffalo right now. There is chatter of Rex Ryan being willing to release Manuel if he does not win the job in camp. The 25-year-old received high praise from new offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who came out saying that Manuel is doing a “very good job” and put in hard work this offseason. While his roster spot isn’t a guarantee, Manuel is still a key cog in the Bill’s preseason plans.

Tyrod Taylor

While many might just shrug this away (I know I almost did) there may be some light at the end of this story. Rex Ryan is a big fan of Taylor, saying that he tried to trade for him when he was with the Jets. The 25-year-old spent four years backing up Joe Flacco in Baltimore, but he flashed the skills in college NFL coaches want to see. Watch out for him as he gets more reps during the preseason games,

Outside Options

None of the Bill’s current quarterback options are visually appealing ones. While the free agent and trade markets are mainly bare, there is still some meat on the bones. In free agency, look out for Michael Vick, who played for Rex Ryan’s Jets last season. Matt Flynn and Tyrell Pryor are also intriguing options. As for the trade market, keep an eye on Mike Glennon, Matt Barkley or AJ McCarron as guys on the trade block.
