Michael Sam Signs CFL Contract with the Montreal Alouettes
Former SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year Michael Sam has signed a CFL contract with the Montreal Alouettes. The deal is for one year with a second year team option. The defensive end was drafted in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft by the St.Louis Rams, but was a training camp casualty. He was later signed by the Dallas Cowboys as a practice squad player, but never got the opportunity to play in an NFL game.
“With the signing of Michael Sam, we have become a better organization today,” said Alouettes’ general manager, Jim Popp. “Not only have we added an outstanding football player, we have added even a better person that brings dignity, character, and heart to our team.”
The former SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year out of Missouri, will now get a chance to open eyes on a stage that might be the most important of his life. While at Missouri, Sam recorded 111 tackles and 18.5 sacks over this four year career. He has not played in an official football game since his last game at Missouri. This offseason Sam particiapted in the first ever NFL Veterans Combine in Arizona, but did not receive any offers. He also participated as a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars”, where he was voted off early in the competition.
“I am very excited and proud to join the Montreal Alouettes and want to thank team Owner Robert Wetenhall, General Manager Jim Popp and Head Coach Tom Higgins for this opportunity,” says Sam. “I cannot wait to put on the pads, get back on the field and work hard each and every day with my teammates to bring a Grey Cup to the great fans here in Montreal.”
Sam is expected to be announced at a press conference Tuesday, May 26th in Montreal.
