New York Jets Draft Plans Changed with Ryan Fitzpatrick?
By Joe Wedra
With the New York Jets making a trade to acquire QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, one question begs to be asked: where does the NFL Draft outlook stand?
With many rumors surrounding the team and a potential run at Marcus Mariota, things are beginning to shift in a different direction.
If any team wants to acquire the former Oregon QB, it appears they’ll have to jump into the top-5 to make the move. Right now, Gang Green sits in an awkward position.

Picking at six, it’s unlikely and quite frankly impractical to believe that Mariota lands in New York. With the NFL need at quarterback at seemingly an all-time high, we can assume the Jets won’t wake up on May 1st with Mariota as their quarterback of the future. (Barring a blockbuster trade, of course)
Because of this, Ryan Fitzpatrick has been entered into the picture.
It’s still highly possible that Geno Smith has the reins of the offense in Week One. However, the team is obviously set on adding a few more security blankets to enter training camp.
What does all of this mean for the NFL Draft?
Simply put: options.
It may all boil down to a receiver or more help on offense, but adding help to shore up the pass rush is the most likely situation. In our last staff mock draft, our Sayre Bedinger mocked Dante Fowler Jr. In others around the web, players like Randy Gregory and Vic Beasley fill the pick at #6. Regardless of who the prospect is, the consensus is that the Jets would benefit from an EDGE prospect.
While the “trade back and take a CB” option was once a highly-attractive one, it doesn’t make much sense now with the prized addition of Brandon Marshall.
The same could be said at the receiver position after nabbing Brandon Marshall.
Without Marcus Mariota, the Jets have options. However, those options could end up puzzling the Jets’ brass over the next several weeks. Do they attempt to trade up? Or do the weapons at #6 make enough to stay put?
