NFL Free Agency: QB Brian Hoyer, Texans Agree to Deal
Reports indicate that former Cleveland Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer, a free agent this offseason, has agreed to a new deal with the Houston Texans and former offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien.
Dianna Marie Russini was the first to break the story on Twitter of the QB-coordinator reunion.
Here’s what our Charles McDonald (@NFLDraftWhiz) had to say about Hoyer as a free agent looking for a new team before he signed on.

“The former Michigan State Spartan has been a solid quarterback since entering the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He won some games as the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns this year, until he was taken out of the starting lineup for the disaster that was Johnny Manziel. Hoyer can be a nice option at backup quarterback who won’t kill you if he has to start for an extended period of time. With a solid defense and running game, Hoyer won’t be a huge liability — however the onus can’t be on his shoulders.”
The fit for Hoyer in Houston is really simple, and obvious if you look into it on the surface. He is reuniting with Bill O’Brien, who coached both he and Ryan Mallett when they were with the Texans. At last word, the Texans were also rumored to be close to a deal with Mallett, so it would give them a pair of former Tom Brady backups competing for a starting job.
There seem to be plenty of those around the league, don’t there?
GRADE: B
The Texans aren’t stunning anyone with the addition of Hoyer. In fact, I think it’s a solid backup plan if Ryan Mallett doesn’t work out. The Texans need to draft a quarterback in the next year or two to push Hoyer or both he and Mallett, and I think this is a nice way to bridge that gap. Better than some teams, anyway.
