Stock Up: Clemson Outside Linebacker Vic Beasley

Clemson outside linebacker Vic Beasley has been one of the most productive pass rushers in college football over the past few seasons. He racked up 33 sacks over the past three seasons, dominating ACC offensive lines in the passing game. However, he had some issues he needed to clear up at the Combine.

Beasley’s pass rushing prowess was never questioned. The concerns revolving around him focused on run defense and ability to anchor against NFL caliber (and size) offensive tackles. In college, Beasley’s weight fluctuated from the 220s to the 230s. His weigh-in at the combine was going to be crucial for him; teams were looking to see if he could put on good, healthy weight.

He bulked up to 246 pounds, 10 pounds heavier than his listed weight in college. Check.

But how did that weight gain translate into functional strength?

He put up 35 reps on the bench press, tied for first amount defensive linemen. That will help alleviate concerns about his ability to hold up against NFL offensive linemen. Check.

Well he gained weight, showed that it translated to the weight room, but how did that affect his speed?

He quieted those concerns with a blazing 4.53 40 yard dash, which was only .01 seconds behind Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota. Check that off as well.

Vic Beasley seized the day and he vaulted himself into top-15 consideration with his combine performance. When it’s all said and done, don’t be surprised if Beasley ends up going in the top 10. Going number eight overall to Atlanta would be a great fit for him. Dan Quinn’s defense relies on athletic linebackers and he fits the bill there.

Beasley really helped himself with a great in Indianapolis on Sunday, and he’ll use that performance to cash in on draft day.
