Winning the division is the easiest way to make the playoffs in the NFL.  Here are key X-factors that will help determine the outcome of each race in 2015.

AFC East

X-factor:  Darrelle Revis

Make no mistake.  The New England Patriots are not Super Bowl champions with their signing of Darrelle Revis in free agency.  His ability to shut down top receivers was a critical element to their post-season run.  If he stays, they remain favorites but if he leaves it could shift the balance of power in the division and the conference.

AFC North

X-factor:  Marc Trestman

For years the Baltimore Ravens have succeeded with running the ball and playing defense.  Now they have an offensive coordinator in Marc Trestman who has made his name building strong passing attacks.  It’s unclear how this will impact the team and whether quarterback Joe Flacco is ready for such a change.  How they respond will reveal a lot.

AFC South

X-factor:  Texans quarterbacks

The Colts remain division kings in the AFC South, but arguably the most complete team is the Houston Texans.  They have a great defense and a top rushing attack led by Arian Foster.  The only thing they’re missing is a functional body at the quarterback position.  If they can get that area settled down, this team is poised for a run at stealing the crown from Andrew Luck.

AFC West

X-factor:  Peyton Manning

Rest assured.  The single key factor that the entire AFC West is watching is whether Peyton Manning returns to the Broncos.  Rest assured if he doesn’t, the division becomes wide open between the San Diego Chargers, Kansas City Chiefs and the upstart Oakland Raiders as well.  If he does come back, then Denver has the talent to remain on top another year.
