Super Bowl 49: Seahawks on Their Way to a Three-Peat?
By Joe Wedra
Super Bowl 49 will be dominated by many storylines, but one will stand out on the side of the Seattle Seahawks: it’s nearly impossible to win back-to-back Super Bowls. After winning Super Bowl 48, Pete Carroll and his group could be on their way to repeating as NFL champs in just a few days.
The task will be tough, but another (slightly realistic) honor may be a bit more difficult to grasp — winning three in a row.
It seems impossible, but is it? Carroll’s group is one of the most resilient we’ve seen over the past few years, and the outlook for 2015 doesn’t actually look too bad. With almost everybody returning after what should be a smooth Free Agency period, the Hawks should be set up nicely.
Obviously, it’s hard to question what Russell Wilson can do under center. He’s far from the most talented quarterback in the NFL, but the clutch factor he possesses simply can’t be denied. It sure feels like he’s due for a couple more Super Bowl victories.
As long as he’s paired with Marshawn Lynch — who does have a tricky contract scenario this offseason — Wilson’s potential to make deep runs in the playoff will continue. Even without Lynch, there’s no reason to believe Seattle will lose much.
With the heavy run game currently in place, this staff won’t just throw away the rushing attack completely. It might be Christine Michael/Robert Turbin or another addition, but Seattle will iron out any issues needed to give Wilson a suitable counterpart.
On the defensive side of the football, what’s going to change?
DC Dan Quinn will be leaving for the Atlanta Falcons, but only Byron Maxwell and Malcolm Smith are impeding free agents. Assuming the Legion of Boom stays in-tact and Maxwell sticks around for the 12th Man at CenturyLink field, this unit certainly can’t project to be anything but dominant.
The NFL likes parity and surprises, but how can they deny what’s happening in Seattle right now?
It’d be historical, but why can’t we have a three-peat for this dynasty?
