Yes, it’s true that the Cleveland Browns took Johnny Manziel in the 1st round of the 2014 draft. In fact they traded up to the #22 pick in order to do so. By normal conventions that means they’ve made an investment in the Texas A&M product and are hand-cuffed to him for the next three to four years, right?
No. It’s that kind of thinking that creates perennial losers like the Browns have become for the past decade or two. First of all, one must assess whether Manziel is worth the investment. He came in with a lot of fanfare, but since then he certainly hasn’t passed the eye test. All reports indicate he’s talented but lacks a serious commitment to the hard work it takes to succeed in the NFL.
Could he snap out of it? Sure. Still, if the coaches and front office in Cleveland have even the slightest feeling that Manziel is not the answer, then they cannot be afraid to go to the well again for another quarterback early.
If they’re looking for validation, they need only see the Carolina Panthers. They made Jimmy Clausen their first pick in 2010, expecting him to become their starter. After one year of terrible play, they realized the error and instead of sticking it out brought in Cam Newton with their first pick in 2011. They’ve made the playoffs twice since then.
Johnny Manziel has done nothing on or off the field to warrant having a second chance, regardless of his draft status. The Cleveland Browns have two first round picks. They are well within their rights to correct that mistake.
