Phillip Dorsett: 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report

facebooktwitterreddit

University of Miami’s WR Phillip Dorsett is one of the most explosive and electrifying athletes in this year’s 2015 NFL Draft. Dorsett has world class speed that may have him close to Chris Johnson’s combine record in the 40. Thanks to some superb Senior Bowl practices, Dorsett’s stock seems to be on the rise.

Here’s a quick scouting report on Dorsett and a look at his rise up the draft boards.

Strengths:

Dorsett is a blur in the open field, his elite speed has some people calling him the fastest player to come out of the U. The speedster has claimed to run a 4.19 40 yard dash over the summer. While we don’t know how factual that is, you can clearly see his explosive speed on tape. He can be used in the slot, out wide or in the backfield. He is as versatile as it comes — he showed teams just that by taking a end-around to the house in a scrimmage during Senior Bowl Practice.

He is as athletic as it gets. His quickness mixed with his smooth route-running has made him nearly impossible to cover during Senior Bowl practices. He is way more than just a player with straight-line speed. He can get in and out of his breaks as quickly as it gets.

Dorsett could flourish on Special Teams as a return man. He has the speed and size of a potential stud return man. When he hits the open field, it is nearly impossible to catch him. He could be a nightmare for teams to kick to.

Weaknesses:

The Miami standout is small and lacks the strength you’d want in a Wide Receiver. Listed at only 5’10, 183 lbs, he doesn’t have that ideal frame you would want in your wideout.

Dorsett partially tore his MCL in 2013 and scouts would like to officially see how he runs during the combine. His tape shows he hasn’t lost a step, but teams are going to be keying in on Dorsett’s official 40 yard dash time.

Draft Stock:

Dorsett is projected as a Day 2 selection between the late 2nd to the 4th round. If he kills the combine drills, which I fully expect him to do, someone will take him earlier then expected.

Plays to watch: 0:29, 2:02, and 3:31.
