With the first shot ready to be fired, here is the latest updated mock regarding the open NFL head coaching positions?
Buffalo Bills
Previous Pick: Frank Reich
New Pick: Frank Reich
Not much change here. The Bills are searching for somebody who can properly develop E.J. Manuel as a quarterback. Frank Reich not only has ties to the franchise from his playing days, but he’s also emerged as a respected quarterback developer thanks to his success in San Diego. Also being a former quarterback himself only makes this hire easier.
New York Jets
Previous Pick: Mike Shanahan
New Pick: Dan Quinn
Though no GM is in place, a frontrunner has emerged for the Jets coaching vacancy. Dan Quinn makes good sense. He will maintain the defensive excellence the team has enjoyed under Rex Ryan and word is he will be able to bring respected offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan with him if hired. Shanahan is good with quarterbacks and Geno Smith is in need of further development.
Atlanta Falcons
Previous Pick: Rex Ryan
New Pick: Rex Ryan
It’s not clear if he’s the favorite yet but Rex Ryan is expected to get a second interview from the Atlanta Falcons. The fit makes good sense. He’ll bring defense and attitude to a team that needs it and also seems to have a good offensive coordinator in mind in former Bears head coach Marc Trestman. It’s a good pitch that has the best chance of working.
San Francisco 49ers
Previous Pick: Vic Fangio
New Pick: Vic Fangio
Other names have passed through the 49ers rumor mill but thus far nobody has broken through the idea that the team may choose to promote in-house with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. He knows the players, they love him and he has had the most impactful interview, at least according to the best rumors. Until that changes, Fangio is the favorite.
Oakland Raiders
Previous Pick: Jack Del Rio
New Pick: Jack Del Rio
The hints keep dropping but nothing changes for the Raiders. Jack Del Rio was a favorite from the start and ongoing news continues to report that he has a strong shot at landing the job. The experience and continued success in Denver are big positives. If he can make himself available soon, the chances are good he claims the position.
Chicago Bears
Previous Pick: Todd Bowles
New Pick: Mike Shanahan
Ryan Pace taking over as GM changes things for the Bears. Having learned under Mike McCarthy and Sean Payton, Pace sees big value in a charismatic head coach who has a good relationship with the quarterback. This puts veteran Mike Shanahan directly in his sights. He’s experienced, instills discipline and has a good relationship with embattled quarterback Jay Cutler. If Pace and Shanahan meet and find common ground, this hire is a no-brainer.
