Bryce Petty: Baylor QB 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report
By Joe Wedra
Baylor QB Bryce Petty brings us one of the most interesting quarterback prospects in recent memory. With his impressive size and veteran leadership abilities, Petty will give an NFL team searching for a leader in the 2015 NFL Draft a potential starting-caliber option on their depth chart.
Below is a quick scouting report on the Baylor superstar, including potential draft stock and role in the NFL.
STRENGTHS
Nobody can deny the size and simply commanding presence Petty possesses when he hits the field. If it’s worth anything, he looks the part.
His arm strength is absolutely fantastic, able to make the tough throws needed to succeed at the next level. Along with his build and ability to sling it, athleticism is no question. He moves well for someone of his size and can make plays with his legs when needed.
Petty is in a very college-based scheme, and he’s shown the impressive ability to have a “gamer” mentality and handle a heavy load throughout the game. It certainly helps that he was able to sling it over 800 times in his last two seasons.

WEAKNESSES
While it might not be fair, NFL teams are going to judge Petty due to the scheme and positions he was put in during his time at Baylor. He was able to run the spread scheme extremely well, but the NFL is a different animal. He may not be ready to handle the speed, size, and pure football-feel of 11 NFL defenders on the field at the same time.
Accuracy was a bit of an issue for Petty in the 2014 season. He had a chance to increase his stock in a big way in his Sr. year, but struggled to flash perfection in any big game aside from the Cotton Bowl, a performance that seemed to be more of an aberration than anything else.
DRAFT STOCK
With all factors combined, it’s hard to say Petty is going to be looked at as anything more than a project. After his on-field career at Baylor, he grades out to a Day Three pick that falls significantly behind the top-tier of passers in this class.
