New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons Get Black Monday Started
By Erik Lambert
Black Monday is the favorite time of year for a lot of fans fed up with coaches and GMs. The New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons got the 2014 edition underway.
Rex Ryan and John Idzik jettisoned
There will be many reasons as to why the Jets chose to part ways with head coach Rex Ryan and GM John Idzik after two seasons together but the ultimate reason is a simple one. Their collective NFL record is 12-20. The fans have hated Idzik for his conservative personnel moves while Ryan has worn out his welcome for not making the playoffs since 2010. Woody Johnson has already brought in veteran executive Charley Casserly as an advisor in the search for a new GM and head coach, so this process was inevitable.
Expect the Jets to create a more fluid situation at the top with less compartmentalization in their structure.
Arthur Blank ready to fire Mike Smith after blowout
Another team that is expected to act quickly on their head coaching situation is the Falcons. After a solid run under Mike Smith that saw Atlanta reach the playoffs four out of five seasons, which included a trip to the NFC championship, the team has fallen hard over the past two years with records of 4-12 and 6-10 respectively. Even so, Smith still had a chance to save his job the last day of the season by winning at home against Carolina for the division title. Instead his team came out flat and were thoroughly dismantled 34-3. That defeat will prove to be the final nail in the coffin for Smith.
GM Thomas Dimitroff should be safe on the other hand.
