Jim Harbaugh Could Set Off Firestorm By Going to Michigan
By Erik Lambert
With the season winding down and teams already looking ahead to the finish line and the search for their next head coach, one constant has remained the same from the beginning of the rumor mill. Jim Harbaugh is the big fish to get. He is the one name every single team wanted a new head coach will be gunning for.
And why not?
Harbaugh is a winner at every level he’s coached. He turned Stanford into a national powerhouse and then took over the San Francisco 49ers and instantly turned them into Super Bowl contender. He revived the career of Alex Smith as a quarterback and then developed Colin Kaepernick into one of the more revolutionary dual-threats the game has seen in a long time. Unfortunately difference within the organization, specifically with the front office has led to Harbaugh seeking a way out.
Most believed he had every intention of finding another NFL team. Even that was thrown into question when the University of Michigan put on the full-court press by offering him a staggering six-year deal worth $48 million. Harbaugh is an Ann Arbor alum and viewed as the savior of a program that has fallen on hard times. Rebuffed initially, they have made it clear they’re serious, and now Harbaugh is being compelled by friends and family to pursue the position.
Were that to happen it would throw the entire NFL coaching search into chaos. Suddenly instead of a measured approach geared by the Jim Harbaugh watch, teams would be scrambling to scoop up the best coordinators, assistant or college coaches they can. It would be a race like no other, like a plug pulled from a drain.
Fun to watch but kind of messy in the trenches.
