Chicago Bears Can’t Give Marc Trestman The Tom Coughlin Treatment

It may be a lost season for the New York Giants, marking the third-straight they’ve missed the playoffs.  However, all signs out of the Big Apple indicate that head coach Tom Coughlin, who was on the hot seat for those very reasons, is expected back.  The primary reason for this is stability but also the positive turn the team has taken down the stretch, winning back-to-back games in convincing fashion.

Such a turn in opinion likely raises this question.  Will the Chicago Bears reconsider their stance on head coach Marc Trestman if the team can do the same over the final three games?  The honest answer to that is yes but it shouldn’t be.

Here is the thing.  Trestman is not Coughlin.  The reason the 68-year old Giants head coach is getting some leeway despite missing the playoffs for three years is because of two reasons:  the Lombardi trophies he brought back to the city.  Winning two championships gets a coach involved with Hall of Fame talk and there is no indication that Coughlin has somehow lost the Giants locker room despite their unfortunate record.

That is not the case for Trestman.  He has no championships to fall back on save for his Grey Cups in Canada, which mean nothing to NFL fans.  Worse still, there are several warning signs that he has totally lost control of his locker room.  Players and coaches are getting into confrontations both on and off the field.  The latest of course was the comments by offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer regarding quarterback Jay Cutler and his inability to properly run the Bears offense.

Trestman insists things aren’t as bad as they seem but given some of the horrendous losses the team has suffered in 2014, people have stopped taking him at his word.  Still, in spite of it all, there is still a strong sense that the Chicago Bears brass will bring him back.  If so, then it won’t be because he wins them games, which is the most important reason of all.
