It’s Official: The New York Jets Are Going Quarterback in 2015
By Erik Lambert
Watching Monday Night Football and the utter lack of faith the New York Jets had in Geno Smith, a 2nd round pick from LAST YEAR, to put the ball in the air said it all. Smith threw the ball just 13 times on the night for 65 yards and yet still managed to throw an interception. The quarterback situation has devolved further than it ever was with Mark Sanchez (sorry Jet fans). Rex Ryan is going to be fired at seasons’ end and a new coach brought in. First order of business?
Find a real quarterback.
The only question is how.
Free Agency
If they’re seeking a quick fix they will probably look to free agency. Problem is the pickings are expected to blow anybody away. Brian Hoyer has likely played his last snap in Cleveland with the Johnny Manziel era now active. He could be an option, as could…wait for it…Mark Sanchez whose contract is up after this season. Like it or not he’s playing well for the Eagles so maybe a new coach could lure him back.
Trade
Another potential quick fix is the trade market. While it’s still a little early to pinpoint any realistic options, there are some names the Jets need to track carefully. Jay Cutler is not winning over many people in Chicago. Despite a solid statistical season, he’s having turnover problems. Still he’s experienced and can have streaks of very effective play, especially when he has a defense to lean on. There are also Robert Griffin III, E.J. Manuel, Brock Osweiler, and perhaps Mike Glennon as other options.
NFL Draft
As it stands the New York Jets pick 5th in the 2015 NFL draft. That should give them a prime opportunity to land one of the top quarterback prospects in the class, whether it be Marcus Mariota or Jameis Winston. Much will depend on who they hire as their next coach and whether he’s willing to take on the task of developing a rookie. If so, then expect the Jets to do what it takes to get the guy they want.
