Was Tom Coughlin Buried By Jacksonville Jaguars Loss?
By Erik Lambert
At one point in time, head coach Tom Coughlin was thrilled whenever the Jacksonville Jaguars won a game. After all, before taking over the New York Giants, that was the team he commanded first in the NFL. He led them to two AFC championships but after failing to reach the Super Bowl was dismissed. The Giants scooped him up and the rest is history.
Now, almost poetically, it seems his tenure in New York reached its breaking point after ten seasons when his Giants added another chapter to their ugly season when they blew a 21-point lead against the 1-10 Jaguars to lose 25-24. It came about for the same reasons the team has lost games all year. They gave up turnovers at the worst possible time and the defense couldn’t slam the door when they had a chance. One came from Eli Manning, who has been generous all season and the other came from tight end Larry Donnell who has shown inconsistent hands most of the year.
The Giants are now 3-9 and eliminated from post-season play for the third-straight year since their Super Bowl run in 2011. Tom Coughlin has had a tremendous run with the team but at age 68 appears to not have the same impact he did earlier in his tenure.
Don’t be surprised if the New York Giants decide to clean house when the regular season ends. The question then will be whether Coughlin coaches again, and if so, who will pick him up?
