If you didn’t watch Sunday Night Football featuring the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys, chances are you missed the greatest catch of all-time.
There are plenty of other phenomenal, mind-blowing catches in the history of the league, not the least of which was one of the strangest catches and most clutch plays in Super Bowl history when Eli Manning connected with David Tyree on arguably the most improbable catch these eyes have seen.
However, talking about pure skill, concentration, and not as much luck involved, the catch that rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. made on Sunday night is the best I have ever seen, and it’s not even really close. Beckham was interfered with on the play in a bad way, but had the strength to power through the Dallas defense trying to essentially tackle him before he caught the ball. He then adjusted and contorted his body to make a one-handed (or, three-fingered) catch while also making sure his body didn’t go out of bounds.
See it for yourself.
When I saw this play happen live, I literally threw my computer to the side so I could stand up and shout at the TV, upset about the lack of physics that were being displayed in this play. Beckham Jr. is famous for making these crazy catches in pre-game warm-ups with his humongous hands, essentially catching the ball like a baseball. In this catch, it almost looks like he’s getting ready to throw a split finger.
I’m sure there are some other great candidates out there for the best catch of all-time, but this one stands alone, in my opinion, even among the Tyree catch. Beckham Jr. is a freak of nature and this is not out of the ordinary for him dating back to his LSU days. Watching him play as a member of the Tigers, you could always see an NFL receiver and a guy with strong hands and the ability to separate like not a lot of other guys have.
Unfortunately for Beckham Jr., this catch came in a loss, but the best game he has played so far as a pro. He is a superstar in the making and the Giants are really fortunate to have him. In a class of wide receivers so great, the Giants are thanking the football gods daily for Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans, who allowed Beckham Jr. to fall in the draft.
