College Football Rankings: Alabama the Weakest #1 Seed Ever?
By Joe Wedra
The college football rankings like to tell us that the Alabama Crimson Tide is deserving of the #1 seed, but the tape says otherwise. There’s no clear favorite in the College Football Playoff this year, but if there was ever one, Alabama shouldn’t be one of the teams considered.
Maybe it’s the SEC-bias or the Nick Saban media infatuation…
Either way, Alabama is quite possibly the worst #1 seed we’ve seen in college football for a long time.

Many won’t look at the game against Western Carolina as a bad one, but what we saw in the first half pretty much put the Crimson Tide season in a nutshell. With all due respect to WCU (because we have to say that), there’s no reason Saban’s crew should have been playing close with an FCS team around halftime. Things weren’t just bad. Whatever extent you want to take the first-half play to, you have every right to do so.
Another friendly reminder: this wasn’t the first time we’ve seen ‘Bama do this in 2014.
They struggled against Florida earlier in the year, they didn’t exactly overwhelm against Arkansas (a one-point win), they came a play or two away from losing to LSU, a team a true #1 should beat.
Maybe we can blame the rest of the competition, or the clear SEC media bias that is out there. At the end of the day however, why aren’t we talking more about a team that has shown serious signs of mediocre football in big moments?
I can understand the reasoning for the Crimson Tide to be considered close to the top. After all, they deserve credit for the things that they have done right this year.
To say they’re the best team in college football might just be a stretch – even if we can’t get enough of that great SEC football.
