The era of the diva wide receiver is alive and well in the NFL, embodied by Dallas Cowboys star Dez Bryant. Outspoken and volatile as ever, the 26-year old was blunt about the situation regarding his impending contract negotiations with the team. Dallas has its share of salary cap problems but owner Jerry Jones has made it his mission to ensure Bryant remains in blue and silver. However, concerns from the teams’ end about his off-the-field issues, most recently a missed curfew in London has them reluctant to offer more guaranteed money.
Bryant wasn’t shy about stating his case bluntly.
"“I just know what I’m going to accept and I know what I’m not going to accept. You know, it’s not about the money. It’s not about none of that. I just feel like a little respect should play a factor in that.”“I love it (here). I really do. But every day you grow. Let’s see what happens. It’s all about respect. It’s all about respect. I am a very loyal person, but just don’t test my loyalty.”"
His words don’t convey the message like he believes. It’s clear money is a very real sticking point in the talks and he’s willing to go elsewhere if he feels the team is trying to lowball him. Is that selfish on his part? Yes, to a degree. However, considering he’s on pace to go over 1,200 yards and double digit touchdowns for the third-straight season, there is little arguing with him. He has backed up every word and earned every dime he’s asking for.
It may hurt the bank, but the Dallas Cowboys must pay Dez Bryant. Otherwise he will end up hurting them with another team.
