Monday Night Football: Panthers vs. Eagles Predictions
By Joe Wedra
Tonight’s Monday Night Football matchup (Panthers vs. Eagles) is one of those “sneaky games” that could turn out to be a classic when all is said and done. Both teams desperately need a win in their respective NFC division race, so why not make a few predictions? Can Mark Sanchez repeat last week’s performance and lead Philly to the home win?
Here are a few predictions to get you ready for the big game…
Mark Sanchez does better than last week, picking up over 250 yards through the air.
Nick Foles’ injury will hurt, but Sanchez can come in and make Eagles fans forget about the loss for at-least one more week. He put up 202 yards last week, attempting just 22 passes. The opportunities should open up, but don’t expect the former Jet to sling it all night. The Panthers have been terrible against the run this year, something that bodes well for Chip Kelly’s rushing attack.
Cam Newton gets his running game going, has several lengthy, first-down runs.
If the Panthers want to win, they need to get Newton back on his feet. Using his athleticism is going to be key against an Eagles defense that has plenty of holes. They’ll bring the pressure with Connor Barwin and Trent Cole, but Newton will be able to find space and rely on his legs to get the Panthers out of some tough spots.
Jeremy Maclin gets shut down, catches no more than four passes.
Maclin has received plenty of hype for his incredible last two games (345 yards, 4 TDs combined). He’s been the focal point of this offense – and that’s exactly why his night could be rough. Carolina will feel pretty good about their chances if they can shut down Maclin downfield, so I wouldn’t be shocked to see coverage schemes tailored to blanket the receiver with an extra man up top. I like the Panthers secondary to step up and have a big game.
FINAL SCORE: Panthers edge out Eagles, 26-22
