Buffalo Bills sign RB Phillip Tanner after C.J. Spiller Injury
By Joe Wedra
The Buffalo Bills signed RB Phillip Tanner on Tuesday in a move that simply needed to be made. The team is fighting for an AFC Wild Card spot, but their chances of major offensive production were hurt on Sunday as the injuries continued to pile up.
C.J. Spiller went down with a collarbone injury that is season-ending, and Fred Jackson could be done for a month or so after suffering a groin injury in the same game. The team has Bryce Brown – who actually is extremely strong on film – and former 49ers running back Anthony Dixon. Both will have their chance to break out while sharing the depth chart with Tanner.
Tanner fared pretty well in his time with the Dallas Cowboys, but was cut due to standout play of other young backs, including Joseph Randle. He always shined in the pre-season, but never found significant time on the field to get anything going on a regular basis.
Clarence Hill, who has covered the Cowboys for 17 years, sent out a tweet to spotlight what Tanner is all about:
Tanner is currently in his 4th season in the league, coming from Middle Tennessee State. He was with Dallas for the entirety of his short career. At MTSU, he combined for 34 total touchdowns and was a frequent return-man.
