Thursday Night proved that the Houston Texans remain shackled by the quarterback position and it’s time for a change.

Ryan Fitzpatrick inadequacies on display against Indianapolis Colts

For the first five weeks the Texans were comfortable having a veteran presence under center in journeyman Ryan Fitzpatrick.  His experience was enough to steer the ship while Houston rode dominant defense and a power running game to a 3-2 start.  However, many feared there would come a point where that wouldn’t be enough and that Fitzpatrick would be asked to do more than manage the game.  That prediction came to pass in Houston.  With Andrew Luck staking the Colts out to a 24-0 lead before the end of the 1st quarter, Fitzpatrick failed to complete a single pass, going 0-for-4.  The inadequacy was palpable and Indy made them pay every time they punted.  That, sadly is the reality of Fitzpatrick.  Perhaps it’s time for a change.

Mallett trade was made by Bill O’Brien for a reason

Head coach Bill O’Brien and the Houston Texans brass hinted that the playing time for backup quarterback Ryan Mallett would be dictated by the teams’ record.  They did trade for him for a reason after all.  From a talent standpoint he stands far above Fitzpatrick with a massive 6’7″ frame and cannon arm.  Having studied under Tom Brady for years, he’s ready to pave his own way in the NFL but thus far the Texans have bided their time.  A crushing loss at home to the Colts may be just the catalyst needed in order to set things in motion.  Mallett has waited a long time for this chance and the time is at hand for him to get it.
