Fantasy Football News: Cam Newton Sitting?
By Joe Wedra
In today’s latest fantasy football news, we take a look at the potential of Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton sitting today due to an injury that seems to be lingering.
On NFL Gameday Morning on NFL Network, NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Ron Rivera and the Panthers coaching staff are actively “considering sitting Cam Newton” for today’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While this isn’t a sure thing, it’s something to note as you set your fantasy football roster today.

If this does happen, it will be Derek Anderson taking first-team reps for Carolina today in a game that isn’t exactly a cupcake. Tampa Bay has brought in Josh McCown, drafted Mike Evans, and strengthened the offensive line since they last took the field in 2013. The Panthers are at risk of losing this game already, so having a guy like Anderson trying to keep up with McCown and Co. might be tough.
If you need to make a move, you’ll have to go with your backup quarterback and act like a true GM – next man up! If you’re still not happy with the QB2 you drafted, check out the free agent list in your league. Chances are, you’ll probably do better starting one of those guys even if Cam plays.
Somebody like Carson Palmer with the Arizona Cardinals stands out. He knows how to sling the ball, and the weapons are plentiful in AZ. With Andre Ellington hurt, expect the Bruce Arians-led team to throw the ball a decent amount against the Chargers.
With the Newton news, you might want to be cautious starting any Panthers wide receiver. If you have Kelvin Benjamin or Greg Olsen, you might want to find another option if in fact Newton has to sit out this game.
