2012 NFL Mock Draft: Indianapolis Colts 7 Round Mock Andrew Luck is the Clear Choice

facebooktwitterreddit

The Indianapolis Colts have just fired Bill Polian today which makes this mock draft a little more difficult, but it is one of the few team mock drafts I haven’t done a first version of yet so I push on!

With a new General Manager, a very veteran roster full of expiring contracts and potentially a new coach the Colts can go in a million different directions. Right now I’ll assume they won’t over-haul their offensive and defensive systems and take it from there. As far as needs go, the Colts have needs all over their roster up and down so really whoever is the next General manager should just consider drafting talented players and let the rest work itself out.

I also believe the Colts have their picks rounds 1-7.

1st Round: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

The Colts are in a tough, but great position here. Do they completely rebuild with Andrew Luck or do they mortgage their future away for one last serious run with Peyton Manning? I think either way is a good way to go, but based on everything I’ve read it seems the team will take Andrew Luck. Luck is a great player. He makes everything look easy.  A lot of people compare him to Peyton Manning, but he reminds me a lot more of Eli Manning with more mobility, but that’s not a knock I think the world of Eli Manning’s ability to control an offense.

2nd round: Chase Minnifield, CB, Virginia

Minnifield is a better fit for the system the Colts are currently running than some of the other players. I’ve thought for a long while that the Colts quite frankly have terrible cornerbacks and that didn’t get any better with the release of Justin Tyron. Minnifield is decent value at this point and will start next season for the Colts.

3rd Round: Lavonte David, LB, Nebraska

I don’t think the Colts have anything special at linebacker. Their linebackers don’t make enough plays. At this point David would be really good value. David is a bit undersized, but is a gamer. He makes big plays, hes quick he can run and cover and he attacks the line of scrimmage well.

4th round: Star Lotluelei, DT, Utah

This is a name to watch out for in the upcoming months. He’s a relative unknown now, but not to scouts. He has terrific size and is very quick for a man as big he as he is 6’3 325 pounds. One serious problem the Colts have had forever is stopping the run on defense. Lotulelei can do that and more. Pairing him with Drake Nevis as the future defensive tackles wouldn’t be a bad move. I was never that high on Moala and he hasn’t done anything this year to change my opinion of him.

5th round: Jaymes Brooks, G, Virginia Tech

The Colts could use an infusion of talent at the guard positions. I would love to see them get a little nastier on the offensive line with a player like Temple Guard Derek Dennis, but that doesn’t seem to be their style so I’ll give them Brooks who is more of a guy who mirrors linemen and can move out in space to run their stretch plays and keep Peyton Manning up right in pass protection.

6th round: Tramain Thomas, S, Arkansas

Thomas has what scouts call “NFL athletic ability” but doesn’t always make the easy tackle and doesn’t have great instincts. Still at this point teams can take a flier on a guy who has the physical abilities to excel in the N.F.L game and hope to coach him up. Whoever those coaches might be.

7th Round: Bert Reed, WR, Florida State University

Reed has explosive ability and knows how to get open. However, he is undersized and not the most fluid pass catcher. Still he’s a guy who could come in and challenge some of the mainstays the Colts have at WR. Reed also has the abilities to be a return man, though he hasn’t been used in that capacity with the Seminoles. The Colts really  need to beef up their special teams as they have had to for years.

All right Colts fans I’m not an expert on the Colts so let me know what I got right and what I got wrong.
