New York Jets Announce Decision Regarding QB Geno Smith
Head coach Todd Bowles announced the Jets plan for Geno Smith as teams across the NFL begin to purge their rosters
Very few NFL teams enter the season with four quarterbacks. The New York Jets entered the fourth preseason game with Ryan Fitzpatrick, Christian Hackenberg, Bryce Petty, and Geno Smith on their roster.
Smith, the 39th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft out of West Virginia, was battling second year quarterback Bryce Petty for a spot on the Jets roster.
Friday afternoon, with just over 24 hours remaining to get their roster down to 53 players, the Jets announced they plan to keep all four quarterbacks heading into the 2016 NFL season.
Ryan Fitzpatrick will begin his second season as the Jets starting quarterback, and Geno Smith will be the primary back-up.

Petty suffered a bruised shoulder Thursday night in the final preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team says it is not a serious injury, but they could save a roster spot by placing Petty on short-term injured reserve. However, Todd Bowles said they don’t anticipate making that move.
Christian Hackenberg, the Jets second round pick out of Penn State, is still developing into what the Jets hope is their franchise quarterback of the future. He’s had a rough preseason thus far, and got an extended look against the Eagles in the final preseason game.
New York will host the Cincinnati Bengals in their season opener on September 11.
