Just how important does the loss feel?  No, not the injury to quarterback Tony Romo.  That, of course, is devastating for the Dallas Cowboys.  The 34-year old was their leader and playing some of the best football of his career and still had things going on offense despite the loss of Dez Bryant.

No the question is in reference to running back DeMarco Murray.  How much less panic might there be in the Fort Worth area if the Cowboys knew they had the reigning rushing champion to lean on with their star quarterback out for the next eight weeks pending an CT-scan.

The best way anybody knows how to survive the loss of a great quarterback is by running the football and playing defense.  Dallas seems to have defense now after the way they shut down the Eagles high octane attack but that running game looks underwhelming to say the least.  They averaged 3.3 yards per carry in the win at Philadelphia and weren’t much better last week against New York.

Joseph Randle and Darren McFadden were expected to take over for Murray and fill in the production he brought.  That is looking less and less like a possibility each week and now with Romo and Bryant both out, the way the Cowboys handled Murray’s situation during free agency must be called into question.

One does not replace a runner of that caliber easily and their unwillingness to pay him the money he asked, or at least was willing to settle for based on rumors during the back-and-forth negotiations has now put the team in dire straits.  Unless Randle, McFadden or somebody else can get the ground attack going it’s hard to imagine this Cowboys team hanging on to the NFC East for very long.
