The Kansas City Chiefs will enter the 2015 season without their top cornerback. The NFL handed down a three game suspension to Sean Smith in response to Smith’s DUI plea. The seven-year pro will miss games against the Houston Texans, Denver Broncos, and Green Bay Packers. His first game will be against the Bengals in Cincinnati.

The original charge of careless driving was dropped after Smith submitted a plea deal. Smith paid fines of $346.50 for DUI and $548.50 for failure to present insurance.

The Chiefs released a statement Friday morning in response to the leagues’ decision.

"This morning the NFL notified the club that cornerback Sean Smith will serve a three-game suspension effective week one of the regular season. “We respect and support the league’s decision in this matter and will have no further comment on the situation.”"

The leagues policy is that a suspension will be given to a player who admits or is found guilty of a crime. Smith’s suspension was upped one game due to “damage of property”, referring to the lamp post Smith his the night of his DUI nearly two months ago. Here is the league’s official statement regarding Smith’s three game suspension.

"Sean Smith of the Kansas City Chiefs has been suspended without pay for the first three games of the 2015 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.Smith will be eligible to return to the Chiefs’ active roster on Tuesday, September 29 following the team’s September 28 game against the Green Bay Packers.Smith is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games."

In his six seasons with the Chiefs and Miami Dolphins, Smith has eight interceptions and over 300 tackles in 95 games. His suspension leaves the Chiefs with first round pick Marcus Peters, third round pick Steven Nelson and sophomore Phillip Gaines to cover the cornerback position.
