2015 NFL Draft: NFL Mocks Group Scouting Notes

Last night a few members of the NFL Mocks got together and watched some 2015 NFL Draft film. We feel that scouting as a team helps each other learn more about prospects and mesh together as a staff. Here are some of the things that we noted.

More from NFL Draft

Oregon defensive lineman Arik Armstead is a physical specimen. He is a rare athlete and moves extremely well for a man that measured in at the NFL Combine at 6’7″ 295 pounds. Based strictly off of his physical skills, he should be a top 5 pick. However, he was inconsistent on film. The general consensus was that he started games hot, but seemed gassed in thesecond half. With his physical ability, he’s going to show stretches of pure dominance, but at times he looked out of shape.

Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty put up big numbers in college, but there are questions about how his style of play will translate to NFL success. We noted that his short and intermediate accuracy is very good, but that is typical of most of these quarterbacks coming out up-tempo spread attacks. We wanted to see how Petty’s deep accuracy was, and we were left underwhelmed. Petty has sloppy footwork on his deep throws which affects his accuracy. We think he’ll end up going in the middle rounds.

Texas defensive tackle Malcom Brown is one of my favorite players in the class. He has rare speed and explosion for a 320 pound defensive tackle. His effort never runs cold and goes full speed the entire game. I currently have him ranked as the second best defensive tackle in the draft class, behind Leonard Williams and ahead of Danny Shelton. Look for this to be reflected in my next mock draft.

TCU corner Kevin White holds up well in coverage. He played a good game against West Virginia’s WR Kevin White, even though he was giving up a lot of size. He’s a quick, instinctive corner who is extremely competitive on tape. We felt that he would fit best in a slot corner role, similar to the Eagles’ Brandon Boykin.

One of my personal favorite prospects in the draft is Colorado State-Pueblo quarterback Chris Bonner. After last night, I think more of the staff is one my side. Bonner has a rare blend of size, arm strength, and mobility. Even though he’s a Division II player, he has the upside to entice a team to spend a late round draft pick on him. Check out this scouting report on the potential sleeper of the year.
