College Football Rankings: Virginia Tech Will Fall Big

Last week, it certainly appeared that nobody was going to be able to stop the Virginia Tech Hokies as they completely dismantled Ohio State in a nationally televised outing. This week, the college football rankings will reflect why the Hokies will no longer be considered a team that is talked about as the “real deal”.

Frank Beamer’s team struggled to repeat last week’s total domination over the Buckeyes, as they fell to East Carolina 28-21 Saturday afternoon. ECU got the big win after falling to the South Carolina Gamecocks last week.

Virginia Tech couldn’t muster anything on offense early, scoring just seven points in the first three quarters of play. The defense allowed 427 yards to ECU quarterback Shane Carden, including a late game-winning drive for the Pirates.

Here were the most notable performances on both sides of the ball:

  • ECU WR Cam Worthy: 6 catches for 224 yards
  • VT QB Michael Brewer: 298 yards, 3 TDs, 2 INTs
  • VT WR Isaiah Ford: 7 catches for 77 yards and 2 TDs

As we move ahead, the Hokies shouldn’t expect to be favored in next week’s polls. They proved on Saturday that they will fail to be a consistent team this year, and can’t be relied upon to be a strong contender week after week. #17 seemed too high this week after just one big win.

I expect VT to stick in the top-25, but they won’t be ranked any higher than around 22 or 23. They don’t deserve to be looked at as a playoff contender with problems on both sides of the ball.

When you look around at the teams that could jump ahead of the Hokies next week, you can make the argument for a handful of teams. Missouri had a huge win against UCF, Ohio State got back on track with a 66-0 win against a MAC team in Kent State, and BYU is proving to be a strong team as we move along in the season.
