Today we’ll take a look at how the rookies performed in Monday night’s win over the Rams. This will give us a baseline for what kind of “needs” to watch for the Giants as the season progresses which will be reflected  in the prospects they might target, or at the least the free agents.

Let’s start with the inactives. Monday night vs the Rams

Prince Amukamara (foot injury), Jerrel Jernigan, James Brewer (at least didn’t play), and Da’Rel Scott were all inactive. Marvin Austin the second round pick is on IR (torn pectoral muscle).  There is nothing to report on these players from Monday night. I could add that Amukamara is getting close to returning and that Jernigan might soon be returning punts again. He has been refining his technique in practice after an awful preseason.

This means that on Monday the Giants 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th,  5th (Darius Reynaud and Sage Rosenfels from last year’s trade), and 7th round (Scott)  are all accounted for. Meaning that any rookie player playing on Monday was from the 6th round (Sash, Jones, Williams) or an undrafted free agents (Paysinger, Herzlich, Henry Hynoski)

Spencer Paysinger and Mark Herlzlich

For the second week in a row Paysinger and Herzlich were strictly involved in Special teams play. They seem to keep lane integrity on special teams, but Herzlich didn’t register so much as a tackle, and hasn’t this season. Spencer Paysinger had 1 tackle on the game Monday night, and has one for the season. It’s odd that Paysinger hasn’t seen the field much this season yet because he was all the rage in preseason. He was getting starter snaps (when Boley was sidelined with an injury) and was usually the first one to enter the game during preseason.

Greg Jones

One of two Giants rookies to get a start on Monday night, (Henry Hynoski is the other). And the Rams took advantage of it. They came out in a no huddle offense and exploited the middle of the Giants defense and the outside as well. They were throwing the ball all over the field. Jones strength right now lies in his natural instincts and his ability to be physical in the run game. Jones wasn’t added another two tackles on Monday night, but unlike the huge tackle for loss in the Redskins game, none of the tackles were of any significant impact.

Tyler Sash

Sash wasn’t on the field in passing situations as much as he was the week before, but he was better on Special teams. Sash had one huge play when he hustled down the field on the first punt to rookie Greg Salas of the Rams and his presence there likely caused Salas to botch the punt. Sash then fell on the ball and knocked it away from Salas for DE Dave Tollefson to recover. A huge play that led to the Giants first touchdown. Sash can still be exposed in the passing game, but he is a player that will have a long productive N.F.L. career because of his hustle and understanding of  the game.
