Top rookies of NFL Week 5: Sam LaPorta wins the Sam LaPorta award
By Beau Adams
The Sam LaPorta Award
Sam LaPorta has become the Lions' offensive lighthouse. As a second-round pick from Iowa, he has quickly become a reliable target for quarterback Jared Goff. Despite being a rookie, LaPorta has set a record for the most receptions by a tight end in his first four career games.
The Iowa product has made a name for himself in the world of tight ends. In potentially the best tight end draft class ever, LaPorta has separated himself as a superstar, hailed as the next George Kittle; he is dominating Kittle this season.
This former Hawkeye is an athletic player with tremendous ball skills, leading all rookie tight ends in targets and receiving yards. LaPorta has been a beacon for the Lions' offense, providing Goff a dependable option in the passing game.
With his athleticism and exceptional ball skills, LaPorta became a reliable target for Jared Goff again in Week 5. The rookie's 5th Top Rookie of the Week award win proves his strong start to the season has been instrumental in the Lions' offensive scheme.
In Week 5, La Porta hauled in 75 percent of his four targets and totaled 47 yards, but his real contribution was his two trips to the end zone. The two scores led the Lions to their fourth win of the season, elevating their status as a Super Bowl contender. As promised, LaPorta's fifth consecutive NFLMocks' NFL Top Rookie TE of the Week award will now and forever be known as the Sam LaPorta award.
