San Francisco 49ers Mock Draft: NFC Champions select the most underrated player in the draft
By John Blair
49ers add the son of a legend to offense
This is another position where the 49ers need to add depth. The unit is led by George Kittle who is one of the top five tight ends in the NFL. However, behind him they have very little. The team reached last season when they took Cameron Latu who only carried a sixth-round grade on my board in the third round. Latu didn’t show much promise in training camp and missed the entire season on injured reserve.
Penn State’s Theo Johnson is another player the 49ers have already met with and he would make sense in the third round. Johnson was named the Senior Bowl National TE Practice Player of the Week and also had a strong NFL Combine. He is an underrated blocker as well, who does a great job of drive-blocking his defender out of the way.
Deebo Samuel’s long-term future with the 49ers is in doubt, and San Fransico has very little depth at this position. No other receiver caught more than 19 passes last season and the 49ers need to start developing some young wide receivers.
The 49ers' top wide receiver in franchise history is Jerry Rice, and with this pick, they add his son Brenden. Brenden is similar to his father in that they both have soft hands and do a great job of looking the ball in. He should be able to fill the role as the team's number three wide receiver as a rookie.
