Steelers add competition for Kenny Pickett

The Steelers will likely add some competition for Kenny Pickett this offseason. One player they have already been linked to is Russell Wilson, but if that doesn’t turn out the team could look to the 2024 NFL Draft to find someone. If they do this I doubt they would pick a player on day one or day two of the draft, but adding a potential replacement on day three makes sense.

A prospect who could fit in that range is South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler. Rattler is one of the better pure passers in the 2024 NFL Draft, and is fresh off being named the MVP of the Senior Bowl. He has a much stronger arm than Pickett does and also has the mobility to make plays both inside and outside the pocket. If he can improve his pocket presence that saw him take 40 sacks last year, he could develop into an NFL starter in a couple of years.

An area of focus for Pittsburgh this offseason will be to upgrade a passing game that finished 25th in the NFL this year. While a lot of that is due to the average play of quarterback Kenny Pickett, adding depth to the wide receiver unit should also be a priority.

USC’s Brenden Rice is a good-sized wide receiver who is coming off a breakout season. In 2023, Rice set career highs in receptions, yards, and touchdowns and finished with an impressive 17.6 yards per catch. He displays soft hands and is a physical presence, especially in the red zone. Plus he comes from great bloodlines as his dad is NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice.
