New Orleans Saints 7-round Mock Draft: Surprise selection has Derek Carr looking over his shoulder
Saints round out the draft by selecting intriguing prospects
The Saints will double dip at tackle with the selection of Penn State’s Caedan Wallace with the No. 190 overall pick in the draft. With Fautanu on board, the Saints add depth at the tackle position with the addition of the 6-foot-5, 314-pound Wallace who has the versatility to play either tackle or guard. His balance of upper and lower body strength makes him a player who could eventually start in the NFL.
Two selections after taking Xavier Thomas, the Saints dip back into the EDGE talent pool and select former UConn star Eric Watts with the No. 199 overall pick. At 6-foot-6, 274 pounds, Watts has the size of a defensive end and could fit in as a backup after a stint on the practice squad.
Watts has prototypical defensive end size and can surprise blockers with his explosiveness. It will just take time for him to find his niche in the NFL.
With Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams leading the running back depth chart, running back isn’t an area of great need for the Saints, but Carson Steele is a production back who could find his way on the 53-man roster. In rushing for 847 yards and six touchdowns during his final season at UCLA, Steele’s soft hands as a receiver could earn him some playing time in the Saints offense.
